Working under the supervision and direction of the BMT Nurse Manager, the role focuses on direct patient care, monitoring for complications, administering complex treatments, and providing education and support to patients and families throughout the transplant journey. The role holder will also collaborate with the multidisciplinary team and adhere to established protocols and international accreditation standards. Key Accountabilities/Responsibilities Direct Patient Care Provide direct, hands-on nursing care to BMT patients, including monitoring vital signs, assessing for early signs of complications such as infection or graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), and reporting findings to the BMT Nurse Manager and medical team. Administer chemotherapy, immunosuppressive medications, blood products, and intravenous fluids according to established protocols and under the supervision of senior nursing staff. Perform central venous catheter (CVC) care, including dressing changes, line flushing, and blood draws, using strict sterile techniques to prevent infections. Assist patients with activities of daily living, including oral care, nutrition support, and mobility, while maintaining neutropenic precautions. Document all nursing assessments, interventions, and patient responses accurately and promptly in the electronic health record (EHR). Patient and Family Education Reinforce patient and family education provided by the BMT Nurse Manager and Patient Educators, ensuring understanding of the transplant process, medication regimens, infection prevention, and side effect management. Provide daily education to patients and families on topics such as hand hygiene, dietary restrictions, and recognition of warning signs requiring immediate attention. Assist in preparing patients for discharge by teaching self-care skills such as central line care, medication administration, and symptom monitoring under the guidance of senior staff. Use clear, simple language and culturally appropriate materials to support patient understanding. Respond to patient and family questions with empathy and escalate complex concerns to the BMT Nurse Manager. Safety and Infection Control Strictly adhere to infection control protocols, including hand hygiene, personal protective equipment (PPE) use, and isolation precautions, to protect immunocompromised patients. Follow medication safety practices, including independent double-checking of high-risk medications and verifying patient identification before administration. Participate in safety initiatives such as fall prevention, pressure injury prevention, and accurate patient identification protocols. Report any patient safety concerns, near misses, or adverse events to the BMT Nurse Manager in a timely manner. Maintain a clean and organized patient care environment to minimize infection risks. Compliance and Documentation Maintain accurate and complete documentation in compliance with hospital policies, FACT standards, and local regulatory requirements. Ensure all patient records, including medication administration records and flow sheets, are completed accurately and within required timeframes. Assist in preparing for internal and external audits by ensuring documentation is up to date and accessible. Follow protocols for the safe handling, administration, and documentation of cellular therapy products. Participate in regular chart audits as directed by the BMT Nurse Manager. Interdisciplinary Collaboration Communicate effectively with physicians, pharmacists, nutritionists, and other healthcare team members to coordinate patient care and report changes in patient status. Participate in daily nursing huddles and contribute to bedside multidisciplinary rounds when appropriate. Work collaboratively with other BMT nurses to ensure safe patient handoffs and continuity of care during shift changes. Support a positive team environment by assisting colleagues during busy periods and sharing observations that may improve patient care. Escalate clinical concerns or resource needs to the BMT Nurse Manager promptly. Professional Development Complete all mandatory training, competencies, and BMT-specific education within required timeframes. Pursue opportunities for professional growth, including attending in-service education, workshops, and obtaining specialty certification in BMT nursing. Participate in unit-based quality improvement initiatives and staff meetings as directed by the BMT Nurse Manager. Accept feedback from senior nursing staff and use it to improve clinical practice. Must have skills Bone Marrow Transplant Qualifications Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) Valid RN license and current BLS/ACLS certification. Specialized certification in oncology nursing or bone marrow transplantation. Minimum of 5 years' experience as a Bone Marrow Transplant nurse Basic understanding of bone marrow transplantation principles, including common complications such as infection and GVHD, with working knowledge of infection control practices including neutropenic precautions. Proficiency in electronic health records (EHR) and clinical information systems for accurate and timely documentation. Competence in medication administration including IV infusions, blood products, and chemotherapy under supervision, with adherence to patient safety protocols such as the "five rights" of medication administration. Strong communication, teamwork, and accountability skills, with willingness to follow established protocols, accept feedback, and escalate concerns appropriately to the BMT Nurse Manager.
