Job title: Biospecimen and Genetics Data Manager
About the Role The Biospecimen and Genetics Data Manager supports data capture, integration, results management, and reporting for more than 30 specimen collection protocols within the UCSF Memory and Aging Center (MAC). Working under supervision, the role ensures data quality, discrepancy management, data transfers, and data sharing with researchers, laboratory partners, and memory center programs.
What You'll Do
- Manage discrepancy handling, manual data review, data cleaning, and data transfers for multiple protocols.
- Merge data from internal and external sources; generate metrics; create reports and visualizations.
- Write and maintain programmatic scripts to support data capture, validation, transformation, and documentation; ensure reproducibility.
- Provide hands-on data management support for dataset requests, including external data from the Specimen Meta Data Tool.
- Assist Genetics and Biospecimen Program Manager clarifying data validation issues and improving data quality.
- Support specimen transfers by querying data repositories, identifying samples, and coordinating transfer of data/results to MAC.
- Collaborate with Genetics and Biospecimen program management and Director of Research Technology on data workflow and governance.
What We're Looking For
- Bachelor's degree in related field and minimum one year relevant experience or equivalent training.
- Working knowledge of research functions; experience in systems programming, scripting and statistical software.
- Proficiency in data analysis, transformation, linking, data schema design, and documentation.
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written; ability to explain complex information concisely.
- Demonstrated track record of maintaining accurate data in complex environments; experience with data quality and governance.
- Proficient in statistical analysis; knowledge of Freezerworks LIMS or similar systems.
- Multitasking, organizing, ability to work in dynamic environment with competing priorities.
- Experience in research environment, preferably wet-lab or close collaboration with wet-lab.
- Excellent Excel and MS Office skills; programming in Python, R or similar; experience with source control and scripting best practices.
Nice to Have
- Minimum of 3 years of research or clinical data management experience.
- Knowledge of HIPAA and handling PHI securely.
- Experience with relational databases and writing queries/reports.
- Basic understanding of genetics and proteomics.
