Biomedical Engineering Program - Assistant/Associate/Full Teaching Professor

The Biomedical Engineering Program in the College of Engineering at Iowa State University (ISU) invites applications for a full-time (nine-month) renewable term position of Assistant Teaching Professor. Exceptional candidates with commensurate experience and proven track record will be considered for the advanced rank of Associate or Full Teaching Professor. This appointment for this position is anticipated to begin August 16, 2027 and the initial length of the appointment will be three years.

The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the teaching and administration of the biomedical engineering capstone design course. The successful candidate will also be expected to teach undergraduate courses in prosthetics/orthotics/robotics, biomedical engineering laboratory courses or other courses in the biomedical engineering program as needed.

As a faculty member, the successful candidate will be expected to engage in institutional service and/or service to the profession. Candidates should have strong communication skills, share our commitment to excellence in engineering education, and exhibit the potential for long-term leadership in supporting the mission of the program, college, and university.

Minimum Required Qualifications (Assistant Teaching Professor):

One of:

• Bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline and 5 years of relevant work experience
• Master’s degree in Biomedical Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline and 3 years of relevant work experience
• Doctoral degree in Biomedical Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline.

Minimum Required Qualifications (Associate Teaching Professor): Record of teaching experience and one of:

• Bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline and 10 years of relevant work experience.
• Master’s degree in Biomedical Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline and 8 years of relevant work experience.
• Doctoral degree in Biomedical Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline and 5 years of relevant work experience.

Minimum Required Qualifications (Teaching Professor): Record of teaching experience and one of:

• Bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline and 15 years of relevant work experience.
• Master’s degree in Biomedical Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline and 13 years of relevant work experience.
• Doctoral degree in Biomedical Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline and 10 years of relevant work experience.

Closely related engineering disciplines for this position include: chemical, mechanical, materials or electrical engineering.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in Biomedical Engineering
• Industrial or teaching experience in biomedical engineering design, including FDA regulations
• Teaching experience in biomedical engineering laboratory experiences
• Teaching, research or industrial experience in prosthetics, orthotics or robotics
• Evidence of ability to communicate with a range of audiences
• Evidence of collaboration and leadership in engineering education

About the Biomedical Engineering Program

The Biomedical Engineering Program is an interdepartmental undergraduate program that is administratively housed in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering. It was launched in the fall of 2023. It currently has an enrollment of 200 students and is moving toward classes between 60 and 70 students. The Biomedical Engineering Program is committed to a student-centered education that emphasizes experiential learning and a strong foundation in engineering, biology, and health sciences. Unique collaborations with the Veterinary College showcase our strengths in the areas of drug and vaccine delivery, biomechanics across multiple scales and biosensing that provide our students with a strong interdisciplinary education.
