About the Role The Major Loss Adjuster for Casualty is responsible for handling various types of complex commercial casualty claims including class actions, large property damage claims, product liability recall claims and other general liability claims and must operate in accordance within all operational/best practices guidelines. This would include determining coverage, drafting reservation of rights and denial letters, attendance at mediation/settlement conferences and instructing independent adjusters and attorneys in the negotiation and settlement of claims. Claims are primarily in Canadian venues, with a small portion of US and worldwide exposures. What You'll Do
- Review casualty claims in conjunction with policy wordings to determine coverage.
- Prepare disclaimer and/or reservation of rights letters and communicate same to underwriters, brokers and insureds when applicable.
- Provide instruction to external lawyers to ensure proper settlement of files.
- Ensure external lawyers follow litigation guidelines.
- Participate in mediation/settlement Conference to reach a settlement of the claim.
- Negotiate settlements directly when circumstances permit.
- Process payments within prescribed timelines.
- Apply best practices in reserve reviews, note-keeping, payment requests, and calendar management.
- Inform management of all complaints, major losses, coverage issues, etc.
- Coordinate with independent adjusters and external attorneys as part of the negotiation and settlement process. What We're Looking For
- Valid AMF commercial license.
- Proficiency in English and French (spoken and written) as some files are outside Quebec or involve anglophone clients.
- Minimum 10 years of experience handling commercial casualty claims.
- College/university education or equivalent experience in the field.
- Ability to make decisions and provide directions to independent adjusters and/or attorneys.
- Fast learner with excellent communication and negotiation skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills.
- Proficiency with claims management software/IT tools for file management.
- Travel approximately 10% to attend mediations.
