Backend Engineer

About the Role Join Wise as a Backend Engineer on the Account Sharing team within the Consumer Squad. You will help build new shared finance products for global use—international joint accounts and kid accounts—designed to help families, couples, and friends manage money together across borders. This is a product-oriented role where you’ll shape solutions from concept to production. What You'll Do

• Build international joint accounts for globally distributed users
• Expand Wise kid accounts into additional markets
• Create shared finance experiences that work across borders
• Design scalable backend systems for high-growth consumer products
• Develop features around shared spending, sending/receiving money, and account customization
• Collaborate on customer discovery and product iteration
• Scale infrastructure and improve reliability across multiple markets
• Build greenfield financial products from concept to production
• Work across multiple areas of the Wise ecosystem (send/receive flows, spend experiences, authorization, FinCrime, shared account infrastructure)
• Collaborate closely with Product Managers, Designers, Analysts, and Researchers to shape solutions What We're Looking For
• Proficiency in backend languages such as Java, Kotlin, Python, or Go
• Strong experience designing asynchronous, reliable, and scalable systems within microservice architectures
• Comfortable working in greenfield environments where requirements evolve rapidly
• Strong product mindset and ability to collaborate with PMs, Designers, Analysts, and Researchers
• Customer-centered approach; understand how technical decisions impact end users
• Comfortable contributing to architectural discussions, challenging assumptions, and influencing direction
• Clean, maintainable, well-tested code with focus on long-term scalability and reliability
• Strong communicator and able to collaborate effectively across teams
• Able to operate independently while contributing to a collaborative culture Nice to Have
• Experience building greenfield products from scratch
• Experience with international consumer products
• Experience with payments, financial systems, or compliance-heavy environments
• Experience building systems at global scale
• Familiarity with event-driven architecture and Kafka

• Starting salary: £87,500 - £145,000 per year plus RSUs
