Job title: Backend Engineer - Payments
About the Role Stripe's Payments organization builds APIs and platforms that enable businesses to accept payments globally. We are looking for backend engineers who can design, build, and maintain scalable APIs and services to process money movement at a global scale, collaborating with Infrastructure, Product, and other teams. This role involves hybrid work with in-office presence in Seattle or Toronto to support collaboration and user workflows.
What You'll Do
- Design, build, and maintain APIs, services, and large-scale systems that reliably and efficiently handle billions of money movement requests
- Debug and solve production issues across services and multiple levels of the stack
- Mentor engineers to help them grow
- Collaborate with stakeholders across the company to build new features at large scale, while improving internal engineering standards, tooling, and processes
- Collaborate effectively in a distributed and hybrid team, maintaining open communication and strong connections with colleagues
What We're Looking For
- 2+ years of industry software engineering experience (does not include internships or co-ops)
- Strong coding skills in any programming language (language-agnostic interview process)
- Strong collaboration skills; can work across workstreams within your team and contribute to peers' success
- Ability to thrive with a high degree of autonomy and ownership, with an entrepreneurial mindset
- Interest in working as a generalist across varying technologies and stacks
Nice to Have
- Experience with large-scale financial tracking systems
- Good understanding and practical knowledge of cloud-based services (e.g., gRPC, GraphQL, Docker/Kubernetes, AWS, etc.)
Compensation & Benefits
- The annual US base salary range for this role is $190,400 - $285,600 (USD)
- Additional benefits may include equity, company bonus or sales commissions/bonuses; 401(k) plan; medical, dental, and vision benefits; and wellness stipends
