Responsibilities
- Administer PostgreSQL and Amazon Redshift across development, test, QA, and production, including provisioning, configuration, patching, upgrades, maintenance, and lifecycle activities.
- Manage schemas, database objects, extensions, statistics, system catalogs, users, roles, service identities, privileges, and least-privilege access.
- Maintain standards, operating procedures, dependency maps, documentation, and runbooks. Validate backup, restore, recovery, rollback, and continuity procedures.
- Diagnose slow or resource-intensive workloads using execution plans, statistics, workload history, waits, locks, system views, and native diagnostics.
- Implement indexing, statistics, partitioning, materialization, Redshift sort and distribution strategies, workload management, connection, and engine configuration changes.
- Establish performance baselines. Forecast compute, storage, connection, concurrency, workload, and data growth. Recommend scaling, resizing, workload isolation, and archiving strategies.
- Partner with engineering teams to distinguish platform constraints from inefficient SQL, upstream design issues, data-model concerns, or service-level expectations.
- Define actionable monitoring and alerts for availability, connections, CPU, memory, storage, I/O, query duration, queue depth, waits, locks, replication, backups, growth, and failed jobs.
- Use Amazon CloudWatch and native PostgreSQL and Redshift instrumentation to investigate trends, anomalies, and production incidents.
- Lead or support triage, root-cause analysis, corrective actions, and problem-management follow-up. Participate in the production support and on-call model.
- Review database changes for operational risk, impact, backward compatibility, testing evidence, and rollback readiness.
- Promote governed deployments through repositories, Flyway, infrastructure-as-code, and CI/CD processes. Coordinate implementation and post-deployment validation.
- Advise data engineers, report developers, application teams, and architects on database design, SQL performance, security, availability, and supportability.
- Support approved consumers and integrations including APIs, AWS Glue, Qlik, Power BI, Power BI Report Server, and SSRS.
Experience Requirements:
- Ability to comply with Department of Energy 10 CFR Part 810 requirements and obtain and maintain required authorizations, training, access privileges, and approvals. Must be legally authorized to work in the United States and satisfy nuclear employment and regulatory requirements.
- Seven or more years of progressive database administration experience supporting production environments.
- Production PostgreSQL administration, including performance diagnostics, indexing, statistics, backup and recovery, security, upgrades, and troubleshooting.
- Amazon Redshift administration or operational support including query analysis, workload management, distribution and sort design, maintenance, monitoring, and scaling.
- Advanced SQL and execution-plan analysis. Experience with RDS or Aurora PostgreSQL, Redshift, CloudWatch, IAM, S3, and Secrets Manager.
- Experience with Flyway, Terraform, GitHub, CI/CD, and automated database deployments.
- Experience with Qlik Replicate, AWS Glue, Power BI, Power BI Report Server, SSRS, PostgreSQL high availability, Redshift Spectrum, external tables, concurrency scaling, and observability dashboards.
- Experience supporting regulated or highly controlled enterprise environments through formal change, incident, release, security, and access-management processes. Ability to participate in on-call support.
