  • Compensation and Benefits

  • The anticipated salary hiring range is $150,000 - $180,000 per year and is commensurate with qualifications and experience. This is a CSU Management Personnel Plan (MPP) position.

  • The CSU system provides a comprehensive benefit package that includes medical, dental and vision plans, membership in the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS), sick and vacation time, and 15 paid holidays a year. Eligible employees are also able to participate in the fee waiver education program. A summary of benefit information can be found.

Job Summary

Under the general direction of the Vice President and Chief Information Officer (VP/CIO), the Associate Vice President & Deputy CIO for Information Technology serves as the principal deputy and senior executive leader within the university's IT organization. This position provides leadership continuity for the division, acts on behalf of the VP/CIO on matters of institutional significance, and serves as a trusted voice on technology strategy, governance, innovation, and organizational direction.

The Associate Vice President & Deputy CIO is central to advancing the institution's technology vision - driving strategic planning and portfolio prioritization, overseeing IT operations and organizational capacity, and strengthening governance and stakeholder engagement across the university. In this role, the incumbent ensures that technology strategy is tightly aligned with academic and administrative priorities and that the university's investment in technology delivers measurable, mission-driven value.

Key Qualifications

  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of effective leadership, motivation and performance evaluation; Ability to facilitate group participation, consensus building and foster employee development through coaching, counseling and training.
  • Knowledge of business and human resources management principles involving position management, resource allocation, recruitment, and training.
  • Knowledge of current and emerging technologies, technology directions, and strategic application to business needs to effectively drive culture and technology change in a dynamic and complex operating environment.
  • Demonstrated executive technology leadership, with a proven ability to set strategic direction, align organizational capability with institutional priorities, and drive transformational change across a complex enterprise.
  • Strong knowledge of IT governance, strategic planning, and portfolio management, coupled with the financial acumen to steward resources, manage enterprise-scale budgets, and optimize technology investments.
  • Collaborative, inclusive leadership style grounded in integrity and service, with a demonstrated commitment to building high-performing, diverse teams in mission-driven environments.
  • Ability to plan and source high-impact, enterprise-wide strategic programs and digital initiatives and keep leadership and stakeholders informed through metrics, portfolio dashboards, and regular reporting.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in computer science, management information systems, or a related field.
  • Five years of progressively responsible leadership experience within a technology organization, with demonstrated growth in scope and complexity.
  • Proven experience leading and delivering large-scale organizational projects, managing cross-functional teams, and influencing senior leadership and key stakeholders.
  • Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) Foundations certification required at minimum.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in technology, business, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience practicing IT Service Management in a leadership role.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP), Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM), or Change Management certification.
  • ITIL Expert certification preferred.
  • Experience working in higher education and/or union environments.
