Job title: Associate Director, Environmental Clerk of Works (EnvCoW) – Scotland
About the Role LUC is seeking an experienced and established professional to join as Associate Director to lead our Environmental Clerk of Works (EnvCoW) service in Scotland. The role can be based from Edinburgh or Glasgow and will involve developing and leading a team that operates across site and office settings. You will consolidate and strengthen EnvCoW delivery and drive growth, expanding our geographic reach and client base, while shaping LUC’s broader post-consent service by integrating ecological, environmental, landscape, planning and cultural heritage expertise into a cohesive market-leading offer.
What You'll Do
- Strategy, Service Development & Growth: Lead the strategic development and growth of LUC’s EnvCoW service in Scotland, shaping a clear vision and market position; consolidate and enhance service delivery, embedding best practice and innovation across projects; identify opportunities to expand geographic reach and diversify offerings within the post-consent and construction sector; lead the development of integrated post-consent services across disciplines.
- Business Development & Client Leadership: Develop and maintain strong relationships with key clients, regulators, and industry stakeholders, including the Association of Environmental Clerks of Works; lead the development of a robust pipeline of opportunities; act as a senior representative for LUC within the EnvCoW and wider environmental sector.
- Technical Leadership: Provide technical leadership and quality assurance across EnvCoW projects; guide complex ecological risk management, mitigation strategies, and licensing approaches for large-scale projects; support project teams in resolving regulatory issues and stakeholder concerns; maintain a strong understanding of relevant legislation, policy, and best practice to inform delivery.
- Collaboration & Cross-Disciplinary Integration: Work closely with colleagues across ecology, planning, landscape and cultural heritage to deliver integrated post-consent solutions; lead or contribute to multidisciplinary projects; facilitate effective internal collaboration to maximise client value and strengthen LUC’s market offer.
- Ownership & Governance: The role includes the opportunity to share and participate actively in the management and ownership of the business through the Employee Ownership Trust.
What We're Looking For
- Extensive experience in Environmental Clerk of Works (EnvCoW) or construction-phase environmental management, with a strong understanding of compliance, licensing, and environmental risk management (pollution prevention, surface water, waste, protected species).
- Demonstrable experience of leading and delivering complex projects or programmes, including oversight of quality, programme, and financial performance.
- Strong commercial awareness, including experience of budget management, forecast, and client relationship management.
- Experience within Scotland or similar regulatory contexts; ability to operate at a senior level or be prepared to advance into a leadership-focused role.
- Collaborative and proactive approach with the ability to build positive relationships with clients, regulators, and multidisciplinary teams; an interest in developing services and growing client relationships.
Compensation & Benefits
- Salary: £58,000 - £64,750 FTE (dependent on experience).
- Hybrid working model with minimum two days in the office; flexible working options including part-time arrangements.
- Employee Ownership Trust participation and opportunity for joint management and ownership of the business.
- Based in Edinburgh or Glasgow with travel to sites and client offices as required.
