About the Role The Associate Dean for Medical Education (ADME) provides strategic leadership for Undergraduate Medical Education at the Boonshoft School of Medicine (BSOM). This role oversees the design, implementation, and continuous improvement of the MD program curriculum and ensures alignment with accreditation standards, student learning outcomes, and institutional priorities. The ADME provides strategic oversight of the curriculum through a pillar-based leadership model, collaborating with Vice Chairs responsible for Foundations Phase, Doctoring Phase, Clinical Skills, and Assessment & Evaluation to ensure curricular integration, quality, and innovation. This role also serves as the Chair for the Department of Medical Education (DME) consistent with the school’s governance framework and faculty appointment and advancement processes. The Associate Dean collaborates closely with institutional leaders across student affairs, clinical education, accreditation, admissions, and health system partners to ensure an integrated and effective educational experience.

What You'll Do

  • Provide strategic leadership for Undergraduate Medical Education (UME) through oversight of Foundations, Doctoring, Clinical Skills, and Assessment & Evaluation; ensure alignment, integration, and continuous improvement of the curriculum; lead curricular development, instructional design, and innovation.
  • Provide academic leadership for the Department of Medical Education (DME) in alignment with BSOM faculty governance structures; lead faculty, staff, and administrative teams on academic and instructional matters related to student success.
  • Determine priorities for medical education based on organizational strategy and learning needs; develop programming focused on teaching, curriculum development, and evaluation/assessment of learners.
  • Ensure coordination of departmental educational programs, including curricular and assessment functions; facilitate research and scholarly activity in the UME program.
  • Contribute to the development of medical student performance evaluation (MSPE); partner with clinical affiliates to support and enhance the clinical learning environment.
  • Accreditation and Educational Quality Improvement: Collaborate with the Associate Dean for Accreditation and Quality Improvement on LCME-related oversight; monitor and improve curriculum performance using outcomes data; support curricular documentation and inform curricular decisions.
  • Professional Development and Mentoring: Provide direct supervision to Vice Chairs and Assistant Deans; mentor faculty and staff; support clerkship directors and ensure consistent clinical placements and educational experiences across sites; aid in reviewing existing academic partnerships.
  • Other responsibilities aligned with the school’s governance and accreditation requirements.

What We're Looking For

  • MD, DO, or equivalent medical terminal degree; or terminal degree such as PhD or EdD. If physician, eligible for licensure in Ohio and board certification.
  • At least five years of direct participation in medical school environment with knowledge of curriculum and assessment; minimum five years of progressive leadership in medical education.
  • Demonstrated scholarly achievement in medical education or related field (peer-reviewed publications, presentations, or funded educational initiatives).
  • Experience supervising faculty and staff in academic or clinical settings; ability to lead teams and collaborate with diverse stakeholders.
  • Eligible for faculty appointment at associate or full professor rank; advancement commensurate with experience. Associate Professor requires 5+ years as Assistant Professor with strong scholarly portfolio and supervisory experience; Full Professor requires 5+ years at Associate Professor with demonstrated leadership and portfolio.

Nice to Have

  • Knowledge of LCME accreditation; familiarity with contemporary medical pedagogical issues.
  • Experience with curriculum assessment and evaluation focused on measurable student outcomes.
  • Track record of leading and engaging with faculty to achieve outcomes.
  • Experience with academic budgeting and resource management.
  • Strong written and large group presentation skills.
