About the Role The Lawrence Herbert School of Communication at Hofstra University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant/Associate Professor in the Department of Journalism, Media Studies, and Public Relations (JMSPR). The position will teach undergraduate and graduate courses in Journalism beginning in spring or fall 2027. The successful candidate will be a forward-looking thought leader with knowledge of the digital, ethical, and economic landscape of journalism, and with the ability to teach reporting, writing, and digital tools across multiple platforms. The role may involve teaching sports journalism and audio/visual journalism areas and contributing to Hofstra’s interdisciplinary programs (Sports Media and Broadcast/Streaming Journalism). The appointee should demonstrate a commitment to inclusive community and to establishing a strong record of scholarship and service.

What You'll Do

• Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in Journalism, reporting and writing, media ethics, digital tools; possibly media history, sports media, and other courses in candidate's strengths.
• Teach advanced reporting and storytelling techniques using audio, video, photography, data, social media and emerging media.
• Contribute to program development and innovation to meet news media industry needs.
• Engage in scholarly activity in journalism or journalism education and participate in service on department/school/university committees.

What We're Looking For

• Terminal degree or doctorate in journalism, communication, or related field.
• Professional experience in journalism.
• Demonstrated teaching ability or potential; strong digital communication and writing skills.
• Knowledge or background in sports journalism and/or audio/visual journalism preferred.
• Additional background in mass communication theories and concepts is desirable.
• Commitment to building an inclusive community.

Nice to Have

• Knowledge and skill in Sports Media and/or Broadcast/Streaming Journalism; background in mass communication theories.

Compensation & Benefits

• Salary: $100,000-$110,000 per year.
• Benefits include generous paid time off, paid holidays, tuition remission for employees and eligible dependents, and a retirement plan with University contributions.
