Assistant Professor – Behavioral Science & Community Health
The Department of Health & Kinesiology in the College of Health at the University of Utah invites applications for a Tenure Track Assistant Professor whose research aligns with the Department’s Behavioral Science & Community Health Research Theme.
We seek an innovative and collaborative scholar with a strong or emerging program of research focused on understanding and improving health and health behaviors across individuals, populations, communities, organizations, and/or health systems.
The Behavioral Science & Community Health Research Theme advances understanding of the multilevel factors that influence health and health behaviors and develops, evaluates, disseminates, implements, and sustains approaches to improve health across diverse populations and settings.
Areas of Research Interest
Areas of research interest may include, but are not limited to:
Designing and testing health promotion, disease prevention, and chronic disease self-management across the lifespan;
Understanding health behavior (e.g., physical activity, nutrition, weight management, sleep) change and the behavioral, social and structural, or environmental determinants of health;
Dissemination and implementation of science focused on community and clinical strategies to improve the reach, accessibility, adoption, implementation and sustainability of evidence-based interventions;
Digital, mobile, LLM -based, AI-enabled, adaptive, or other innovative approaches to health behavior change;
Community-engaged and community-based participatory research;
Supporting priority population strategies to improve health outcomes among populations experiencing disproportionate disease burden or barriers to health-promoting resources; and
Multilevel interventions spanning individuals, families, organizations, communities, health care systems, or policy environments.
Candidates whose scholarship bridges behavioral science and other areas of departmental or University strength are particularly encouraged to apply. We welcome a range of methodological approaches and do not expect candidates to work across all areas listed above.
Position Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be expected to:
Establish and maintain an innovative, collaborative, and externally funded program of research;
Disseminate research findings through high-quality peer-reviewed publications and presentations at national and international scientific meetings;
Contribute to collaborative and interdisciplinary research within the Department, College of Health, University of Utah Health, and broader University community;
Teach undergraduate and/or graduate courses consistent with departmental needs and the candidate’s expertise;
Mentor undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral students and contribute to the Department’s research-intensive MS and PhD programs; and applied MS program;
Contribute to the intellectual and scholarly activities of the Behavioral Science & Community Health Research Theme; and
Participate in appropriate service to the Department, College, University, profession, and/or community.
Minimum Qualifications
Applicants must have:
Earned doctorate (PhD, DrPH, ScD, or equivalent) in kinesiology, health promotion, behavioral science, public health, psychology, nutrition, implementation science, or another discipline relevant to behavioral science and community health by the start date;
Evidence of the potential to develop an independent and impactful program of research;
A record of peer-reviewed scholarship appropriate to career stage;
Evidence of, or strong potential for, obtaining competitive extramural research funding;
Evidence of, or potential for, excellence in teaching and mentoring students; and
Strong potential to contribute to collaborative and interdisciplinary research.

Additionally, faculty have access to 24 core research facilities available at the University (cores.utah.edu) and the opportunity to collaborate with other entities across the academic and health sciences campuses including the Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute, Center for Metabolic Health, Center on Aging, Huntsman Mental Health Institute, Huntsman Cancer Institute, the Responsible Artificial Intelligence Initiative, Digital Health Initiative, College of Health Community Outreach and Engagement, among others.
Faculty in the Department of Health and Kinesiology have afforded success in obtaining extramural funding such as support from NIH, CDC, DOD and NSF.
