Job Summary
The Philosophy Discipline in the Department of Language, Culture, and the Arts, College of Arts, Sciences, and Letters (CASL) at the University of Michigan-Dearborn invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Philosophy, with an area of specialization in Philosophy of Artificial Intelligence and an area of competence in Philosophy of Science or Philosophy of Mind. The preferred starting date is September 2027. Candidates must hold a Ph.D. in Philosophy by the time of appointment and demonstrate strong potential for excellence in research and teaching. The Philosophy Discipline is committed to excellence in undergraduate education and scholarship. Philosophy serves students from across the university through high-enrollment foundational courses as well as upper-level courses in a broad range of philosophical areas. The successful candidate will contribute to the continued development of the Philosophy curriculum, particularly in Philosophy of Artificial Intelligence and related areas, and will have opportunities for interdisciplinary engagement with programs and faculty across the university. Teaching responsibilities are based on a 2-2 teaching load and will include courses in the candidate’s areas of specialization and competence, as well as foundational Philosophy courses such as Introduction to Philosophy, Critical Thinking, and Ethics. The successful candidate will be expected to develop and teach courses in Philosophy of Artificial Intelligence and related areas, which may include AI Ethics and Philosophy of Technology. The successful candidate will be expected to maintain an active program of scholarly research appropriate to a tenure-track appointment and to contribute service to the Philosophy Discipline, the Department of Language, Culture, and the Arts, the College, the University, and the profession. This is an on-site position, and the successful candidate will be expected to teach in a variety of modalities, including in-person, hybrid, and online courses.
Required Qualifications
- Ph.D. in Philosophy completed by the time of appointment.
- Area of specialization in Philosophy of Artificial Intelligence.
- Area of competence in Philosophy of Science or Philosophy of Mind.
- Evidence of, or strong potential for, excellence in philosophical research.
- Evidence of, or strong potential for, excellence in undergraduate teaching.
- Ability to teach foundational undergraduate Philosophy courses, including courses such as Introduction to Philosophy, Critical Thinking, and Ethics.
- Ability to develop and teach courses in Philosophy of Artificial Intelligence and related areas.
Desired Qualifications
- Demonstrated potential for interdisciplinary teaching, research, or collaboration involving artificial intelligence and related areas.
- Experience with, or interest in, developing connections between Philosophy and other academic disciplines or programs.
