Job Summary
The Department of English at Xavier University of Louisiana invites applications for a non-tenure track Assistant Professor to teach our Freshman Composition sequence. The ideal candidate will have a Ph.D. in English, Rhetoric and Composition, or an M.F.A. in Creative Writing along with previous teaching experience at the college level. Degree at time of application or official notification of completion of the terminal degree is required by August 1, 2027.
The department is particularly interested in candidates with experience supporting the success of students from diverse educational, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds, including those served by HBCUs. Successful candidates will demonstrate a commitment to fostering inclusive learning environments, reducing barriers to student achievement, and advancing student engagement, persistence, and academic success for all learners.
Job Duties
- Teach a 4-4 load of ENGL 1000, 1010 and/or 1020 sections, through in-person instructional modes
- Advise students
- Participation in service activities for the Department, the University, your discipline, and the community is also expected
About the Department
The English Department at Xavier offers a B.A. in English as well as minors in English and Creative Writing. In addition to serving the Universities Core Curriculum needs for Introductory and Advanced Rhetoric Courses, English instructors also offer multiple classes that fulfill the Creative Expression Core Requirement. The department faculty have existing strengths in African American and African Diaspora Literature as well as Women’s Writing.
Minimum Qualifications
- Ph.D. in English, Rhetoric and Composition, or M.F.A. in Creative Writing
- Experience teaching English composition at the college level
- Strong commitment to teaching a full load of 24 credit hours per academic year
- Write and Speak English proficiently
- Commitment to the mission of Xavier University of Louisiana
Preferred Qualifications
- Ph.D. in English or Rhetoric and Composition
- Experience with teaching, as well as a strong publication record in English composition or a related field
- Successful experience in undergraduate teaching
- Successful experience teaching to a diverse student body and knowledge of effective strategies (e.g. culturally responsive or inclusive pedagogy, awareness of issues that may affect the success of minoritized students)
- Awareness of pedagogical best practices and ongoing commitment to developing and maintaining knowledge in this area
