Assistant Professor of Engineering
The Austin College Department of Physics and Engineering invites applications for the tenure-track position of Assistant Professor of Engineering. Candidates must have Ph.D. in hand before the position begins in August 2027. We encourage applications from candidates with enthusiasm for teaching and involving undergraduates in their research. Candidates with expertise in industrial engineering, manufacturing engineering, mechanical engineering or similar fields are particularly encouraged to apply.
The department has six faculty members and is home to undergraduate degree programs in engineering, engineering physics, and physics. The Bachelor of Science in Engineering degree program was launched in Fall 2025 and is growing rapidly. Students may choose to complete a concentration in mechanical or electrical engineering, or graduate without a concentration.
The successful candidate will support a variety of undergraduate engineering courses through all levels of the curriculum. The new faculty member will bring with them expertise that will help shape the continued growth of the program, including the potential addition of a third engineering concentration. In addition, the new faculty member will be an integral part of preparation for ABET accreditation, lab space setup, and establishment of the program’s culture.
The department faculty are dedicated teacher-scholars with a strong commitment to teaching, undergraduate research, broad education, and mentoring in a liberal arts environment. We seek candidates who can engage students through hands-on learning and foster connections with regional industries. The College supports and encourages faculty-led research and scholarship through startup support, the Summer Sciences Research Program, and access to professional development funds. The successful candidate will also contribute to the Austin College Compass Curriculum by offering January Term courses every other year and participating in the First-Year Experience mentoring program.
The program benefits from the strong growth of the semiconductor industry. Major companies are investing heavily in semiconductor fabrication facilities in Sherman TX, creating abundant opportunities for Austin College engineering students and faculty. This is enhanced by the College’s proximity to the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. The College is also a founding member of the Texoma Semiconductor Innovation Consortium recently designated a Tech Hub authorized by the CHIPS and Science Act.
