Job title: Assistant Professor of Chemistry
About the Role The position is a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor of Chemistry at Carson-Newman University, beginning August 2026. The candidate will teach organic chemistry (with lab) and biochemistry (with lab), as well as general chemistry or non-majors courses as needed, and will work to develop an undergraduate research program in biochemistry or bio-organic chemistry aligned with existing programs. The role also includes advising and serving on university committees.
What You'll Do
- Plan and deliver lectures; develop assignments and grade student work; maintain regular presence in the classroom.
- Teach organic chemistry (with lab) and biochemistry (with lab), and general chemistry or non-majors courses as needed (12 hours per semester on campus).
- Develop an ongoing undergraduate research program in biochemistry or bio-organic chemistry that complements existing biochemical and analytical programs.
- Advise and mentor students on academic paths and careers; participate in university committees; contribute to curriculum development.
- Stay current in the field through research and conferences; publish and present as appropriate; engage in professional development.
- Support the university through service and attendance at required events.
- Update and revise current course materials and develop new courses or programs as needed.
What We're Looking For
- Ph.D. in chemistry; post-doctoral or industrial experience desired.
- Preference for research interests in biochemical or bio-organic chemistry; applicants with interests bridging inorganic, organic and biochemistry are especially encouraged; willingness to pursue innovative pedagogy is positive.
- At least 1 year of teaching experience in higher education preferred.
- Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills; advanced organizational skills; ability to establish and maintain working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and other stakeholders; strong research skills in organic and/or biochemistry.
- Commitment to teaching excellence and to supporting the mission and identity of a Christian university; willingness to regularly attend a local church.

- Research interests bridging inorganic, organic and/or biochemistry; interest in coupling teaching and research.
