About the Role The History Department at the University of Massachusetts Boston seeks a tenure-track assistant professor in early modern or modern Chinese history beginning September 1, 2027. The successful candidate will have an active research program, demonstrated teaching excellence, and a Ph.D. in History or a closely related field by August 31, 2027. The appointment includes teaching undergraduate surveys of Chinese and East Asian history, upper-level courses, and contributing to the MA program. What You'll Do
- Teach undergraduate surveys in Chinese and East Asian history
- Teach upper-level courses in areas of specialization
- Contribute to the graduate (MA) program (online and in-person)
- Maintain an active research agenda; participate in departmental service and share responsibilities with a 2-2 teaching load What We're Looking For

- Ph.D. in History or a closely related field by August 31, 2027
- Ph.D. in History or related field with focus in early modern or modern Chinese history
- Regional expertise in China since the early modern period; ability to expand curriculum and East Asian studies
- Commitment to interdepartmental collaboration and to advising a diverse student body Compensation & Benefits
- Salary range: $80,000–$84,417 per year
