Job title: Assistant Professor - Astrophysics and Planetary Science
About the Role The Department of Astrophysics & Planetary Science at Villanova University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position starting in August 2025. We seek candidates in theoretical and/or observational Astrophysics or Planetary Science, with strong potential for independent research and undergraduate mentorship. The successful candidate will contribute to departmental research directions, participate in teaching within a Liberal Arts & Sciences environment, and pursue external funding. Startup funds and robust resources are available, including a high-performance computing cluster, guaranteed access to the 1.3-meter Robotically Controlled Telescope at Kitt Peak National Observatory, onsite research telescopes, and a public observatory.
In the Research Plan, applicants should indicate how their research interests complement and/or expand the Department's directions. The candidate should be committed to undergraduate education and be able to attract external funding. What You'll Do
- Develop and lead an independent research program involving undergraduate students.
- Teach and mentor undergraduates in astronomy and related courses.
- Prepare and execute a Research Plan aligning with department directions and pursue external funding.
- Collaborate with colleagues within the Department and across Villanova, leveraging HPC resources and telescope facilities.
- Contribute to service and other academic activities as appropriate.
What We're Looking For
- Ph.D. in a field relevant to Astrophysics or Planetary Science by the start date.
- Strong potential for independent research in theoretical and/or observational astronomy or planetary science.
- Research interests in Stellar Astrophysics, Planets (exoplanets or Solar System), Space Weather, or Astrobiology.
- Commitment to undergraduate education and the teacher-scholar model in a Liberal Arts & Sciences environment.
- Ability to establish and maintain an active undergraduate research program and attract external funding.
