Job title: Assistant Director of Engineering
About the Role Under the direction of the Facilities Director, the Assistant Director-Design Engineering leads a team of professional engineers. The role provides engineering peer reviews for mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and civil designs, offers consulting services to Facilities Services units, other UCSF departments, and assigned contractors/sub-contractors, and coordinates installations, maintenance, modifications, system overhauls, and repairs. The position also monitors energy and utility consumption and develops recommendations to meet the department’s energy efficiency goals and to establish benchmarks for new and existing buildings using industry best practices.
What You'll Do
- Lead and manage a team of professional engineers; provide engineering peer reviews for mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and civil designs.
- Deliver consulting services to Facilities Services units, other UCSF departments, and assigned contractors or sub-contractors.
- Coordinate and evaluate installations, maintenance, modifications, system overhauls, service, and repair of mechanical/plumbing systems.
- Monitor energy and utility consumption; provide recommendations to meet energy-efficiency goals and establish benchmarks for new and existing buildings using industry best practices.
- Align with the Facilities Director to meet schedules and goals and ensure compliance with established policies; drive prioritization of initiatives and effective resource use.
- Communicate effectively with senior management and diverse stakeholders; foster collaboration and problem-solving.
What We're Looking For
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field plus ten years’ experience or an equivalent combination.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license; Valid CA driver’s license.
- Expert knowledge of OSHA, Environmental, Health and Safety regulations as they relate to design and execution of projects and incorporating sustainable development practices.
- Extensive knowledge of building codes and regulations applicable to engineering projects.
- Broad knowledge of planning, design and implementation of engineering systems in a plant environment (e.g., biomedical facilities including vivarium, BSL-2 and BSL-3 laboratories, central utility plants and multi-use spaces).
- General knowledge across engineering disciplines; demonstrated ability to lead, motivate and influence others.
- Highly effective communication and presentation skills; ability to convey complex information to diverse groups.
- Demonstrated advanced interpersonal skills to interact with senior management, peer-level managers and outside contacts on matters of significance.
- Strong ability to prioritize and oversee initiatives to achieve goals.
- Strong ability to work in a highly collaborative manner; readily assess complex challenges and barriers and recommend effective resolutions.
Nice to Have
- Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
- Certificates in engineering management and specialty areas covered by the various engineering disciplines being managed.
- Certifications; APPA, CEFP, IFMA CFM/FMP, BOMI RPA/FMA.
- Broad knowledge of campus human resources, fiscal, and budget policies and procedures; strong regulatory compliance knowledge for engineering construction management.
- Demonstrated ability to coordinate a large number of projects, of varying size, type, and complexity.
- Extensive work experience in educational research universities or institutions and collaboration with researchers and university officials.
