About the Role The Assistant Attorney II is a professional position reporting to the Director, Division Chief, or Senior Attorney, and provides a variety of legal services for the City of Dayton, which may include civil, traffic, administrative, or criminal matters. The role supports the Director of Law in offering legal counsel and representation to the City and its departments, boards, officials, and employees. The position involves legal research, oral and written opinions, and may include representation at administrative tribunals and in municipal and state courts, including jury and non-jury matters. It also encompasses plea negotiations and settlements, and drafting a wide range of legal documents. The incumbent must stay current on relevant areas of law and fulfill CLE requirements. What You'll Do

  • Provide legal counsel and representation to the City and its departments, agencies, boards, officials, and employees.
  • Conduct legal research and render oral and written legal opinions.
  • Represent the City at administrative tribunals and before municipal and state courts (common pleas and appeals), including both jury and non-jury matters.
  • Handle plea negotiations and settlements of civil cases, controversies, and claims.
  • Draft memoranda, pleadings, briefs, contracts, ordinances, resolutions, legislation proposals, leases, deeds, purchase agreements, and administrative regulations and policies for the City.
  • Stay informed of municipal, criminal, and related fields of law and fulfill all CLE requirements. What We're Looking For
  • L.L.B. or J.D. from an accredited law school in good standing with the Ohio Bar Association.
  • At least 3 years of experience as a practicing attorney.
  • Master’s degree in Business Administration or Public Administration may substitute for one year of the above required experience.
  • Degree from an accredited institution by the U.S. Department of Education via the North Central Association or equivalent region.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license at time of appointment and maintain thereafter.
  • Must be licensed to practice law in the State of Ohio and maintain thereafter.
  • Background check, including Employment Authorization and Identity, required prior to employment.
  • Final appointment contingent upon passing a job-related medical examination including a drug screen; nicotine screening required; tobacco/nicotine-free status maintained as a condition of continued employment.
