The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering ( CVEEN ) at the University of Utah invites applications for two 9-month, tenure-track faculty position in Environmental Engineering with an anticipated start date of August 1, 2027. The positions are anticipated to be filled at the Assistant or Associate Professor level.
Position Description The successful applicant(s) will be required to develop an externally funded research program, teach undergraduate and graduate courses in Civil and Environmental, mentor undergraduate and graduate students, produce scholarly publications, collaborate with other faculty on professional development interests, and provide departmental, college and university service. An earned Ph.D. degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or a closely-related discipline before the date of hire is required. Strong communication skills and the ability to work collegially and collaboratively with diverse internal and external constituencies are also necessary. Professional engineering licensure is highly desired or the candidate should have the potential to get a P.E. soon after their appointment.
The successful candidate(s) will have a skillset that complements and expands existing expertise in the department. We invite candidates with a demonstrated record of innovative, high-impact research across the broad field of environmental engineering. Areas of particular interest include, but are not limited to: environmental and analytical chemistry, geochemistry, and/or reactive transport in surface, subsurface and engineered systems; environmental biotechnology and bioprocess engineering; emerging contaminants and their detection, fate, transport, treatment, and remediation; advanced water and wastewater treatment, including membrane and nanomaterial-based technologies; resource recovery, waste valorization, and circular-economy approaches, including recovery of critical materials; environmental sensing and real-time monitoring; and data-driven environmental engineering, including artificial intelligence, machine learning, digital twins, and intelligent environmental systems. Candidates whose research creates new connections among environmental engineering, water, energy, infrastructure, natural systems, and emerging technologies are also encouraged to apply.
Candidates with strong core fundamentals that allow them to work across disciplinary boundaries are particularly encouraged to apply. We are seeking highly motivated team players looking to help advance our exciting undergraduate and graduate engineering programs and contribute to the Department’s online education efforts. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the newly added environmental emphasis for undergraduate students. Assistant professors are supported by a reduced teaching load of one course per semester until tenure to aid in the development of a robust research portfolio during the pre-tenure period.
Part of the Big 12 Conference, the University of Utah is a Carnegie Research 1 University located in Salt Lake City at the foothills of the beautiful Wasatch Mountains. Founded in 1850, the University of Utah now enrolls over 38,000 undergraduate and graduate students. The area experiences the four seasons and is known for world-class outdoor recreational activities including skiing, hiking, and biking. The Civil and Environmental Engineering department is one of seven rapidly growing departments within the John and Marcia Price College of Engineering. In the past decade, the number of tenure-track faculty positions has grown by 50% and research expenditures have more than tripled, to $61 million per year, placing our College in the top 30 engineering universities in the country for research volume (2022). The CVEEN Department currently has 22 tenure track faculty members, five lecturing faculty, plus we are actively searching for five positions including these vacancies. Our enrollment is 100 full-time graduate students, and 440 undergraduate students. The department has an active research program with over $19 million in external funding in 2023.
