About the Role

William Woods University is seeking ASL Lab Mentors to support ASL students in language learning, conversation skills, and language mastery within the campus ASL Lab. This part-time role involves mentoring, creating activities, and assisting with lab operations under the supervision of ASL Interpreting faculty.

What You'll Do

  • Tutor ASL students one-on-one or in small groups in an immersion setting on assignments and skills designated by instructors or identified as problematic.
  • Design activities and materials, including ASL videos, with assistance from ASL and Interpreting instructors.
  • Mentor students on the cultural and social conventions of the contemporary Deaf community.
  • Provide online and videophone assistance to ASL & Interpreting students; support the lab's technology needs and equipment.
  • Prepare and/or implement videotaping or digital taping of materials for ASL classes; maintain the ASL lab and materials; maintain student documentation as required.
  • Attend trainings as required; maintain laboratory supplies; perform preventative maintenance on equipment.
  • Instruct students on proper lab procedures for video-connected sessions; provide guidance and support to students using the ASL & Interpreting Lab and Bottega; support staff and faculty as assigned.
  • Maintain timely contact with the designated lab liaison regarding scheduling; perform related duties as assigned.

What We're Looking For

  • Education: High School Diploma or GED required; American Sign Language fluency as determined by WWU ASL/Interpreting Faculty during interview.
  • Experience: Prefer two years in a supportive educational setting with activities such as activity design, direct instruction, skill analysis and feedback, and matching activities to student skill level or teacher recommendation.
  • Age/Background: Applicants must be twenty-one years of age or older and must pass the Missouri State Background Check.
  • Skills: Basic computer applications, interpersonal and communication skills; ability to work with people and complete projects; ability to work flexible hours, including evenings/weekends; ability to multi-task and work independently; willingness to learn Mac computer applications.

Nice to Have

  • Two years of experience in a supportive educational setting (preferred) including activity design, direct instruction, skill analysis and feedback, and adapting activities to student skill levels.
