Job title: ASL Interpreter
About the Role The ASL Interpreter provides real-time communication and interpretation services to Lamar Institute of Technology's deaf and hard-of-hearing students, facilitating communication among students, faculty and staff to ensure equal access to education. This non-exempt position reports to the Communication Access Provider.
What You'll Do
- Provide accurate and effective interpretation of lectures, discussions, presentations, and tutoring sessions in real-time for deaf and hard-of-hearing students
- Interpret for students during classroom sessions, meetings, events, and other academic activities
- Collaborate with faculty and staff to ensure materials are accessible and appropriately formatted for deaf and hard-of-hearing students
- Maintain confidentiality and professionalism in all interpreting situations
- Offer exceptional customer service in a student-centered, professional environment at all times
- Uphold and comply with all federal, state, and local requirements pertaining to the security, confidentiality, and privacy of information maintained by the institution, including FERPA
- Evenings and weekends as needed
- Other duties as assigned
What We're Looking For
- Strong proficiency in American Sign Language and knowledge of Deaf culture
- Commitment to providing inclusive and equitable access to education
Nice to Have
- Associate’s degree or higher in Deaf Education or similar discipline
- Certification from a recognized interpreting organization (e.g. RID, NIC, BEI)
- Experience working in an academic setting
