Looking for an apprenticeship in energy?
We hire on strengths, not grades.
We want to attract the best apprentices and trainees to SSE – committed, driven people with the right strengths and attitude. These matter more to us than your school grades or academic qualifications. That’s why there are no minimum grades required for many of our apprentice and trainee programmes.

How we recruit
We have a four-stage selection process that helps us both find out if this is the right move for you.
- Online application
Submit an online application ahead of the vacancy closing date. We’ll ask you to tell us a bit about yourself. It’s that simple.
- Online Test
Next, you will be asked to complete a selection of online tests to help us understand your fit to an Apprentice or Trainee role at SSE. We know you are unlikely to have much (if any) work experience at this stage, so don’t worry – the assessment process focuses on looking at potential and fit for the role you have applied to rather than looking for experience. Specifically, you will be asked to complete an assessment that is behaviour-based (i.e., asks you about what sorts of behaviours are most like you). The assessment also includes an ability component (i.e., focusing on how you work with different kinds of information). If you’d like to get a feel for what’s involved, here are some practice tests. If you need any adjustments to complete these tests, please email us at [email protected] before you do them and we’ll be happy to help.
- Video interview
If you’re successful in our online test stage, you’ll be progressed to an online video interview. You can do this at a time that suits you best. A video interview is a great opportunity to really sell yourself, but you may feel a little out of your comfort zone. If so, here are some tips:
- Find somewhere quiet where you won’t get distracted. Be sure to switch your phone to silent.
- Prepare properly. Make sure your surroundings are neat and well-lit, and you have a reliable internet connection. Test your audio and webcam in plenty of time ahead of the interview.
- Practice, practice, practice (it really does make perfect). It’ll help your final take shine.
- It might feel a little strange but just be yourself, like you would in any other interview.
- Stay focused on the camera and remember to smile.
- Final Assessment
When you’ve made it through the first three stages, you will be invited to attend an assessment session, which will either be virtual or in person. The assessment is likely to include a group exercise, a presentation, and an interview. You’ll be given plenty of time to prepare, and to inform us of any special adjustments you require.
Good luck!
