About this role

About the Role

Opendoor is looking for an Applied Scientist (ALL LEVELS) to push the boundaries of applied machine learning and AI across valuation systems and beyond. You will tackle a range of ML problems—from precision pricing of homes to multi-modal modeling and operational optimization—using structured and unstructured data to help customers make better decisions.

What You'll Do

  • Design and deploy architectural improvements to our deep neural network (DNN)-based home valuation models.

  • Build interpretable ML models that explain pricing decisions to customers.

  • Incorporate unstructured data—images, videos, or text—into forecasting and valuation pipelines using cutting-edge AI models.

  • Collaborate with Engineering and Ops to enhance human-in-the-loop pricing systems.

  • Improve feature engineering and model training pipelines powering production systems.

  • Rethink risk and optimization models using real-world data and domain insight.

  • Work across the research and modeling stack and contribute to production codebases (Python).

  • What We're Looking For

  • Strong software engineering and Python skills with experience contributing to production codebases.

  • Experience developing and deploying ML models end-to-end—from research and prototyping to production.

  • Hands-on experience with deep learning architectures or similar.

  • Advanced degree (MS or PhD) in computer science, statistics, mathematics, or related quantitative field.

  • Solid foundation in statistics and experimental design.

  • Strong communication and collaboration skills; comfortable working with cross-functional stakeholders.

  • Familiarity with PySpark and distributed data processing.

  • Background in search, recommendation systems, or personalization.

  • Experience working with large language models or vision-language models.

  • Genuine interest in real estate and housing data.

  • Nice to Have

  • Experience applying these models to real estate or pricing problems is a plus, but not required.

  • Compensation & Benefits

  • Base pay range: $156,800-$355,000 yearly, plus RSUs.

  • Benefits: unlimited PTO, medical/dental/vision, life insurance, 401(k).
