Job Description: Senior API & Integration Developer

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Senior API & Integration Developer to join our team and design, develop, and maintain robust, secure, and scalable API and integration solutions. The ideal candidate will have strong expertise in Java development, Kong API development, microservices architecture, and enterprise integration technologies.

In this role, you will be responsible for building and managing APIs, integrating disparate systems, implementing industry-standard integration protocols, and supporting the deployment of reliable solutions across modern cloud-native environments. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver high-quality integration services that meet business requirements and architectural standards.

The ideal candidate is a technically proficient developer with a strong understanding of API management, enterprise integration patterns, DevOps practices, and distributed systems.

Key Responsibilities

• 1. API Development and Management

• Design, develop, test, deploy, and maintain scalable RESTful APIs and enterprise integration services using Java.

• Develop, configure, and manage APIs using Kong API Gateway, including routing, authentication, access control, rate limiting, and traffic management.

• Implement API security, versioning, monitoring, and lifecycle management in line with established standards and best practices.

• Develop and maintain SOAP and REST web services to support communication between internal and external systems.

• Produce and maintain API specifications and documentation using OpenAPI/Swagger and other relevant standards.

• 2. Enterprise Integration and Data Transformation

• Design and implement integrations between enterprise applications, third-party platforms, and internal services.

• Work with XML and JSON data formats to support data exchange across heterogeneous systems.

• Develop and maintain data transformation and processing logic using XPath and XSLT.

• Implement and consume SOAP-based web services using WSDL and related technologies.

• Troubleshoot integration failures, data inconsistencies, connectivity issues, and service communication errors.

• Ensure data integrity, interoperability, and reliable information exchange across integrated systems.

• 3. Microservices and Solution Architecture

• Design and develop modular, maintainable, and scalable microservices-based applications.

• Apply REST, SOAP, and enterprise integration principles to deliver reliable service-to-service communication.

• Contribute to architectural decisions involving API design, service orchestration, system interoperability, and distributed application development.

• Apply best practices for error handling, logging, performance optimisation, resilience, and fault tolerance.

• Collaborate with architects and engineering teams to translate business and technical requirements into effective integration solutions.

• 4. DevOps, CI/CD, and Cloud-Native Deployment

• Use Git for source control, collaborative development, and code management.

• Build and maintain automated build, testing, and deployment pipelines using Jenkins and CI/CD practices.

• Containerise applications and integration services using Docker.

• Deploy, manage, and troubleshoot containerised applications in Kubernetes and OpenShift environments.

• Support application deployment and operations within Microsoft Azure environments.

• Collaborate with DevOps and infrastructure teams to improve deployment reliability, scalability, observability, and operational efficiency.

• Participate in code reviews, automated testing, release management, and production support activities.

• 5. Quality Assurance and Technical Collaboration

• Write clean, reusable, secure, and maintainable code in accordance with engineering standards.

• Conduct unit testing, integration testing, debugging, and performance optimisation.

• Investigate and resolve production incidents and integration-related technical issues.

• Maintain technical documentation, API specifications, integration workflows, and deployment procedures.

• Work closely with product owners, solution architects, QA engineers, DevOps engineers, and other developers to deliver project objectives.

• Stay informed about emerging API management technologies, integration frameworks, and cloud-native engineering practices.

• Required Qualifications and Technical Skills

Candidates must demonstrate practical experience in the following areas:

• Core Development

• -Minimum of 5 years of professional software development experience, with a strong focus on Java and enterprise integration solutions.

• -Strong proficiency in Java programming and backend application development.

• -Hands-on experience with Kong API Gateway development and API management.

• -Data Formats and Transformation

• -Strong working knowledge of XML and JSON.

• -Practical experience with XPath and XSLT for data querying, transformation, and mapping.

• -Architecture and API Development

• -Proven experience designing and developing microservices-based applications.

• -Strong experience developing and integrating RESTful APIs.

• -Practical experience with SOAP web services and WSDL.

• -Familiarity with OpenAPI specifications and API documentation standards.

• -Understanding of API security, authentication, authorisation, versioning, and error handling.

• -DevOps and Cloud Technologies

• -Experience using Git for version control.

• -Hands-on experience with Jenkins and CI/CD pipeline implementation.

• -Experience with Docker and containerisation.

• -Practical knowledge of Kubernetes and container orchestration.

• -Experience deploying or supporting applications on Microsoft Azure.

• -Familiarity with Red Hat OpenShift and cloud-native application environments.

• WSO2 Enterprise Integrator (EI): Enterprise application and service integration.

• Development of integration-oriented applications, services, and APIs.

• Candidates with experience implementing WSO2-based integration solutions or using Ballerina to develop distributed services will be particularly valuable.
