About the Role The Animal Technician is responsible for performing various animal husbandry duties in conventional, immunodeficient, and transgenic/knockout rodent colonies. The role includes maintaining animal rooms, monitoring rodent colonies, and performing medical treatments, emergency separations, and euthanasia as defined by research protocols. This is a per diem, onsite position located in Boston, MA, requiring 20-32 hours per week (including eight hours on either Saturday or Sunday). What You'll Do
- Change rodent cages while strictly adhering to established SOPs.
- Administering special dietary formulations and medicated water to rodents per protocols.
- Maintaining animal rooms and other facility areas per sanitation standards (sweep, vacuum, wash walls, floors, equipment, shelving).
- Monitoring rodent colonies for sick or injured animals up to twice daily; recording findings via SOP, Manage Tasks, and Health Monitoring Reports (HMR).
- Operating and maintaining laboratory animal husbandry equipment (laminar flow benches, biosafety cabinets/hoods, ventilated racks, autoclaves, sterilizers, cage wash equipment).
- Reporting any malfunctioning equipment immediately to supervisor.
- Performing technical duties such as medical treatments of rodents, emergency separations, and euthanasia when required.
- Keeping proper records including room logs and health monitoring reports; using computerized data collection systems and apps (Manage Tasks, HMR, Alerts, Compliance).
- Documenting tasks completed via Manage Tasks, HMRs, Alerts, and Compliance reports as required.
