Alhadeff Studio Head Technician

About this role

The Alhadeff Studio Head Technician works with the design and production teams to implement designs for both Cornish at Seattle University productions and professional rentals. This is a full time, academic year staff position, typically September – May, with additional summer hours, as needed, to support equipment maintenance, summer classes and shows. This position is represented by the collective bargaining agreement between IATSE Local #15 and Seattle Repertory Theatre.

Typical Duties

  • Maintains the facilities of the Alhadeff Studio in conjunction with the Technical Supervisor.
  • Runs IATSE crews during all calls/events in Alhadeff Studio.
  • Collaborates with the Seattle University Academic Venue Supervisor, Production Manager, and Cornish Faculty to build and manage standards in the theater and work rooms.
  • Attends Seattle University department and show/event meetings when scheduled by the Seattle University Academic Venue Supervisor.
  • Maintains accurate equipment inventory records, plots, and associated paperwork in the Alhadeff.
  • Supports the Seattle University Academic Venue Supervisor in maintaining a safe work environment at all times.
  • Works with Cornish productions and client Designers and Seattle University Seattle University Academic Venue Supervisor to:
  • Advise in generating labor estimations and schedule
  • Ensure safe and timely load in, show run & load out of all shows and events
  • Assist students and clients in gear choices
  • Should have a working knowledge of all theatrical technical areas and how they interact. Particular emphasis on electrics and programming, and also including scenery, audio, projections, and more. Should there be a need for work in multiple areas simultaneously, more workers will be scheduled to assist.
  • Acts as the Swing Technician for the SU Playhouse Mainstage.
  • Works cross departmentally in the SU Playhouse with other Playhouse staff as needed
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned, in accordance with the CBA.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Collegiate or other specialized training in theatrical and entertainment staging systems and techniques.
  • Must be able to work well with students in an educational capacity
  • Demonstrated ability to work with professional production teams, performers, and theater staff
  • Strong organizational skills; proven ability to effectively manage multiple priorities
  • Strong leadership and delegation skills
  • Self-motivated, responsible, collaborative and able to work with minimal supervision
  • Experience with PC and Mac; working knowledge of Microsoft Office, proficient in Excel.
  • Comfortable working above the stage floor in a lift or on a ladder.
  • Minimum (3) years experience in theatrical lighting.
  • Basic Understanding of network-based lighting systems
  • Basic Experience with LED lighting equipment, intelligent fixtures and systems.
  • Basic to intermediate understanding of modern audio technologies, including but not limited to: QLab programming, audio over IP (e.g. DANTE), and digital audio consoles (Yamaha QL, specifically)
  • Understanding of design processes
  • Strong technical theater experience, including:
  • ETC EOS Family light board programming
  • Basic lighting design
  • Digital sound system set up and operation
  • QLab programming
  • Theatrical rigging
  • Projection set up and operation
  • Experience with drafting programs (Vectorworks and/or AutoCAD, and Lightwright)
  • Experience with aerial work platforms, and counterweight fly systems.
  • Must be willing to work cross-departmentally and assist other crew members in other skills when requested
  • Must be able to work nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Able to lift a minimum of 50 - 70lbs

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience working in higher education, not-for-profit, or arts environment
  • Production management experience
  • Supervisory experience in a union represented theater/venue.
  • Experience with student work environments
  • First aid, AED, and CPR training
  • Fall Arrest training
  • Aerial lift certification
  • Demonstrated ability to work positively with professional production teams, performers, and theater staff
