• We're building a new Agentic AI Engineering function to rethink how AI can solve some of healthcare's hardest operational challenges. This isn’t a traditional feature-development role. You’ll work directly with senior business leaders, engineers, and domain experts to identify high-value problems, determine where AI can create real leverage, and build solutions through production.

As one of the first Agentic AI Engineers at Zelis, you'll help define how AI is applied across our business while shaping a brand-new engineering function.

• Position Overview

• As an Agentic AI Engineer, you'll work at the intersection of AI, software engineering, and business strategy to solve complex healthcare challenges. You'll own projects from discovery through launch and transition, partnering with internal business and technical teams to design, build, and deploy agentic AI solutions that improve healthcare financial workflows. Success in this role requires curiosity, ownership, and the ability to turn complex problems into scalable solutions.

What You’ll Do

• Partner with internal business leaders and engineers to identify high-value AI opportunities.

• Translate complex healthcare business problems into scalable agentic AI solutions.

• Use the right tool for the problem. Apply AI where reasoning and ambiguity require it, while using deterministic software, rules, and controls where they provide greater reliability.

• Design, build, and deploy production-ready AI agents and applications.

• Build agent workflows, tool integrations, APIs, data pipelines, and orchestration layers.

• Work directly with stakeholders through discovery, implementation, launch, and handoff.

• Improve automation, decision support, accuracy, and operational efficiency.

• Identify reusable agentic patterns that strengthen the core platform.

• Tackle ambiguous problems where there isn't an existing playbook.

• Validate outcomes, establish guardrails, and transition solutions to long-term owning teams.

• What You’ll Bring

• Approximately 3–5 years building software or AI products in startups, applied AI, innovation, consulting, or similar fast-moving environments.

• Experience delivering production software or AI solutions from prototype through launch.

• Experience with LLMs, agents, RAG, tool use, APIs, or modern AI frameworks.

• Interest and experience partnering directly with internal business stakeholders or customers to understand complex problems, lead technical discussions, and translate needs into practical solutions.

• Strong software engineering fundamentals in at least one modern programming language.

• Experience deploying cloud-based production systems.

• Ability to evaluate agent behavior, system performance, and appropriate AI guardrails.

• Comfortable navigating ambiguity and owning problems from discovery through handoff.

• Strong communication skills with both technical and business stakeholders.

• Evidence of curiosity and hands-on experimentation with AI—through your professional work, open source, personal projects, agents, automations, or other technical exploration.

• A builder mindset—we value curiosity, experimentation, and ownership as much as any specific technology stack.

• Location and Workplace Flexibility

• Zelis is headquartered in the U.S., with multiple locations across the country and in Hyderabad, India. Check out our locations to learn more about our offices. All employee work locations are based on the needs of the position and are determined by the Leadership team. In-office work and activities vary based on work and team objectives in accordance with Company policies.

• While location expectations vary by role, candidates within approximately 50 miles of a U.S. office are generally preferred to support collaboration when needed. Our hybrid approach is flexible, and in-office presence is guided by team and business needs rather than a fixed weekly schedule.

• Base

• Salary Range

• $163,200.00 - $224,400.00

• At Zelis we are committed to providing fair and equitable compensation packages. The base salary range allows us to make an offer that considers multiple individualized factors, including experience, education, qualifications, as well as job-related and industry-related knowledge and skills, etc. Base pay is just one part of our Total Rewards package, which may also include discretionary bonus plans, commissions, or other incentives depending on the role.
