Course Descriptions:

AA630 Data Management and Visualization

This course equips students with practical skills and knowledge in managing and manipulating data using Python and SQL, two of the most essential tools in modern analytics. Students will gain an in-depth understanding of relational databases, including schema design, normalization, and query optimization. They will learn to write efficient SQL queries for extracting, transforming, and analyzing data from databases, applying advanced techniques such as joins, subqueries, and aggregations. The Python component of the course focuses on importing, cleaning, transforming, and summarizing data for analysis. Students will work with real-world datasets, applying Python libraries like pandas and numpy to handle data preprocessing and manipulation tasks. Emphasis will be placed on building seamless workflows that integrate Python and SQL for end-to-end data management solutions. Through practical assignments and a project, students will apply their skills to solve data management challenges, demonstrating their ability to handle complex datasets and provide actionable insights. This course prepares students to manage data workflows efficiently and apply their skills in business analytics, decision-making, and data-driven environments.

AA310 Data Visualization

This course examines the art and science of data visualization with a central emphasis on storytelling with data. Beyond the mechanics of plotting points and generating charts, the course highlights how visualizations can be woven into coherent stories that engage audiences and drive action. We will explore how storytelling principles—such as context, narrative flow, emphasis, and clarity—interact with visualization design to shape the way information is perceived and remembered. By studying how elements such as shape, size, color, orientation, and motion influence comprehension, students will learn to craft visualizations that not only present information clearly but also communicate a compelling story that connects data to insight.

ISA472 IT Security and Risk Management

This course explores IT Security from the perspective of risk management. Assessment of IT systems is critical to developing strategies to mitigate and manage risks. This course focuses on effective assessment and risk management strategies that ultimately help the student to implement effective and proactive risk mitigation measures and risk management practices. This course focuses on the IT security threat environment, cryptography, securing networks, access control, firewalls, host hardening, application security, data protections, incident response, and policy. A clear theoretical understanding supports a practical component. Students will learn to audit information systems and use contemporary security software. Hands’ on labs are assigned to simulate risk management processes.
