This is a part-time, on-campus role for the Fall semester (August 29 through December 18) to provide individualized writing instruction in 50-minute sessions and collaborate with FYC instructors to reinforce course objectives.

What You'll Do

  • Design and conduct approximately 15 one-on-one or two-on-one writing support sessions for each assigned student, with each student attending one 50-minute session per week.
  • Provide feedback and guidance to encourage, motivate, and build students’ confidence and skills in reading and writing; develop students’ reading and writing strategies.

  • Coach students on giving and receiving constructive feedback; assist with course logistics and organization; develop tutoring materials (handouts, study guides, instructional aids).
  • Monitor and assess students’ progress throughout the semester.
  • Coordinate and collaborate with FYC instructors: maintain regular communication, review course texts/prompts, and monitor progress toward FYC learning objectives.
  • Perform administrative duties: scheduling writing support appointments, communicating with students and the Writing Lab Coordinator, and maintaining attendance and progress records.
  • Participate in occasional professional development sessions; implement the Writing Lab curriculum in line with UNE’s First-Year Writing community values.
  • Provide equivalent instructional support if the number of assigned students falls below the contracted workload, scheduling an equivalent number of 50-minute sessions each week for the contract duration.

What We're Looking For

  • Master’s degree and at least two years of experience teaching or tutoring writing in a secondary or post-secondary setting, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Advanced knowledge of academic reading and writing practices, conventions, and genres.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify and address students’ developmental reading and writing needs.
  • Excellent teaching and motivational skills, with the ability to work effectively with individuals and small groups while adapting instruction to diverse learning styles.
  • Sensitivity to the needs of underprepared, struggling, and adult learners.
  • Knowledge of effective learning strategies and tutoring methodologies.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
  • Commitment to a collaborative approach when working with students, faculty, and staff to provide integrated learning support services.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, prioritize responsibilities, organize workflow, and meet deadlines.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and sound judgment in resolving or referring complex or non-routine situations.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and web-based instructional technologies.

Compensation & Benefits
