Job title: Adjunct Faculty, Philosophy
About the Role Stevenson University seeks adjunct philosophy faculty for in-person courses in Owings Mills, MD. The position is within the Philosophy program of the School of Humanities & Social Sciences and may be governed by the SEIU Local 500 collective bargaining agreement; this posting is for those interested in being included in the applicant pool for future openings. Teaching responsibilities align with the University’s workload policies and may include courses in the Applied Liberal Arts Department.
What You'll Do
- Engage in instructional activity totaling no more than 18 contact hours per academic year (August through May), with no more than 9 contact hours taught in an individual semester.
- Teach courses in classroom, laboratory, or hybrid/online formats; maintain subject competence; prepare materials; confer with students; direct individual and group studies; review exams and papers; evaluate projects; provide academic accommodations for students with documented disabilities.
- Write syllabi; respond to emails promptly; grade within a timeframe that allows for feedback; submit mid-term and final grades on time; verify attendance; issue academic alerts; and report student problems to appropriate university personnel.
- Respond to student feedback for each course and complete required training or professional development.
- Demonstrate collegiality and professional/ethical conduct; follow all faculty and program policies; exercise academic freedom as outlined by Stevenson University.
- Teaching assignments may include day, evening, online or hybrid classes; meet scheduled class times.
- Reports To: Department Chair, English, History & Humanities.
What We're Looking For
- Education/Experience: Master’s degree in Philosophy, strong commitment to quality teaching, and two years of college-level teaching experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience; Ph.D. degree preferred.
- Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: Knowledge of philosophy, ethics, logic, reasoning and critical thinking; demonstrated ability to apply philosophy to everyday life; ability to instruct students of varying preparation and abilities; excellent interpersonal and cultural competency; ability to communicate professionally with diverse constituencies; ability to create inclusive learning experiences and practice inclusive pedagogy; student-centered approach; ability to assess student performance; proficiency in Microsoft applications (PowerPoint, Word, Excel, Outlook); familiarity with educational assessment practices; commitment to integrity, excellence, learning, and community; experience with Blackboard or a similar LMS; well-developed organizational, reasoning, and problem-solving skills; excellent written and oral communication; ability to manage time and meet deadlines; ability to work effectively with colleagues; ability to travel between campuses; ability to work evenings and weekends as needed.
Compensation & Benefits
- Anticipated to be $1,191-$1,389 per credit/contact hour (subject to minimum enrollment).
