Description of Work
Doane University’s Art and Design Program is seeking a qualified and enthusiastic Adjunct Instructor to teach an online photography course. The course will meet online one evening per week and will introduce students to the technical, creative, and conceptual foundations of photography.
Because students will have varying access to photographic equipment, the course should be designed to accommodate students using digital cameras as well as smartphones. The emphasis should be on developing strong photographic skills, visual awareness, creativity, and an understanding of photography as a form of visual communication rather than requiring students to own professional camera equipment.
Responsibilities

Teach an online photography course one evening per week.

Develop assignments that can be successfully completed using a DSLR/mirrorless camera or smartphone.

Introduce students to photographic fundamentals such as exposure, focus, lighting, composition, perspective, color, and image quality.

Teach camera controls and settings when appropriate while also helping smartphone users understand and maximize the capabilities of their devices.

Explore how light, framing, viewpoint, timing, and composition contribute to successful photographs regardless of the equipment being used.

Introduce students to digital image editing and post-processing using accessible software and applications.

Develop assignments that encourage technical growth, experimentation, creativity, visual storytelling, and personal expression.

Facilitate online discussions and critiques that help students analyze and discuss photographic images.

Provide timely and constructive feedback on student work.

Maintain course materials, assignments, grades, and communication through Doane University’s learning management system.

Minimum Required Qualifications

MFA or MA in Photography, Studio Art, Visual Arts, or in the field for a minimum of five years. Professional photography experience may be considered in combination with appropriate educational or teaching experience.

Strong understanding of both traditional digital photography and contemporary smartphone photography.

Knowledge of photographic composition, lighting, digital imaging, and image editing.

Experience with Adobe Photoshop, Lightroom, or other accessible photo-editing software and applications.

Ability to teach students with different levels of experience and different types of photographic equipment.

Preferred Qualifications

Previous college-level teaching experience is preferred.

Experience teaching online or hybrid courses is beneficial.
