About the Role California Lutheran University’s School for Professional and Continuing Studies (SPCS) seeks a part-time, non-instructional adjunct faculty member to develop one or more fully online courses for the online Bachelor’s Degree for Professional program for working adults. The role requires collaboration with subject matter experts and instructional designers to create complete, Canvas-based courses aligned with program objectives.
What You'll Do
- Based on an approved syllabus, develop a course that meets SPCS objectives within the context of the larger program.
- Use the technologies and materials provided by California Lutheran University to support program delivery.
- Develop for delivery within the Canvas LMS, using CLU templates and standards.
- Work with representatives from the SPCS to ensure the material and syllabus requirements are appropriate for the program.
- Create course content with an instructional designer and incorporate edits after the Quality Matters audit/review.
- Deliver a combination of synchronous and asynchronous content sufficient for a 3-credit hour class.
- Ensure the course results in a complete package, including asynchronous materials (video lectures, readings, homework, exams, projects) and synchronous materials (presentations, slides, notes, activities, lesson plans for live sessions).
- Ensure all materials are available in the Canvas LMS.
- Provide sufficient resources to engage students for the required time on task and to satisfy course learning objectives, with the instructional designer determining which elements are best suited to synchronous vs. asynchronous delivery.
- Provide supplemental resources (textbook, whitepapers, homework, etc.) for self-study, with an expectation of approximately 2 hours outside of class per 1 hour of instructional content.
- Maintain current, accurate records.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
What We're Looking For
- Knowledge of the subject matter being taught (subject matter expert in the field).
- Instructional design principles and pedagogical methods/learning theories.
- Educational technology tools and Learning Management Systems (LMS).
- Ability to create and manage online content, quizzes, discussion forums, and other interactive elements.
- Current theory and practice within the subject discipline.
- Principles and best practices of effective online teaching.
- Accessibility standards and ability to design inclusive and accessible online courses.
- Knowledge of multimedia elements (videos, animations, interactive simulations); video editing, graphic design, and multimedia software is a plus.
- Assessment techniques and ability to create effective quizzes, exams, and other evaluations.
- Ability to analyze data to improve the course.
- Ability to plan, organize, and deliver online courses on time and within budget.
- Demonstrate professional standards and the ability to collaborate with subject matter experts, instructional designers, and other team members.
- Excellent written and oral communication.
- Deliver course curricula in various learning styles and integrate current/emerging instructional technologies.
Nice to Have
- Knowledge of video editing, graphic design, and multimedia software.
