Position: Temporary SUN Activity Leader Location: Cherry Park Elementary, Portland, OR 97216 Schedule: Monday-Thursday 3:00pm-5:30pm Fall 2026 term: September 28 through November 19, 2026

Description

• The SUN Activity Leader designs, plans and teaches afterschool activities in areas such as arts & crafts, sports, academic enrichment, and STEM. Each class will serve approximately 12-16 students grouped by grade level. Class materials and supplies are provided. Under the supervision of the SUN Site Manager, the Activity Leader is responsible for developing engaging, age-appropriate lessons with ties to academics, recreation and the arts, and for creating a safe, positive learning environment.

• Essential duties

• Develop and teach engaging, age-appropriate lessons with ties to academics, recreation and/or the arts during afterschool hours

• Supervise groups of 12-16 students while maintaining school-appropriate decorum

• Supervise during daily routines such as meals, recess, bathroom breaks, and class transitions

• Record and submit student attendance daily

• Maintain classroom and school rules to ensure safety

• Communicate with the SUN Site Manager about student progress, successes and concerns

• Keep the SUN Site Manager informed about overall class development and needed support

• Maintain positive relationships with students, families, school staff, and custodians

• Work within school and agency policies

• Protect student confidentiality

Qualifications

• Experience teaching children and creating lesson plans

• Desire and ability to work with children in an enriching, positive, safe setting

• Independent, self-motivated, creative and resourceful

• Excellent organization and interpersonal communication skills

• Cooperative and able to work as part of a team

• Willingness to ask questions for clarification and task completion

• Enthusiasm for working with children and inclusivity

• Experience with groups of elementary-age children and strong behavior management

• Must be at least 18 years old

• Must be legally able to work in the United States

• Spanish speaking skills a plus

• Basic English proficiency (read, write, speak)

• Criminal background check required

• Hours

• Monday-Thursday, 3:00pm-5:30pm

• Term: Fall term; SUN activities not held on no-school or early release days

• Position may continue for future terms

• Part-time, temporary

Varies depending on experience
