Mercor is hiring a senior Accounting & Audit Domain Expert to work with a leading AI lab’s research and program management teams.
The role focuses on improving how advanced AI models understand and perform real-world accounting and audit work. You will use your professional accounting expertise to review AI-generated work, create high-quality accounting tasks and reference solutions, and build evaluation benchmarks that measure whether AI models are producing accurate, defensible results.
This is a specialist role for an experienced accounting or audit professional who can distinguish between an answer that merely sounds convincing and one that would withstand review by a senior accounting or audit professional.

- Design challenging accounting and audit evaluation tasks and benchmark datasets.
- Help create domain-specific evaluation criteria and tools for AI systems.
- Work with AI researchers, program managers and other subject-matter experts to calibrate quality standards.
- Translate professional accounting judgment into clear, structured criteria that AI systems can be evaluated against.
- Provide precise written feedback on model performance and areas for improvement.
Qualifications
-
Active professional credential such as CPA, CA, CIA, CFE or CMA, together with a bachelor’s or master’s degree in accounting or a closely related field.

-
Hands-on professional use of Large Language Models (LLMs) and the ability to identify the difference between sound professional reasoning and plausible but incorrect AI-generated answers.
-
Ability to work 40 hours per week for the initial six-month engagement.
-
Strong written communication and the ability to provide precise, well-structured feedback.
-
Must currently live in the Bay Area, California, or be willing to relocate there at personal expense before the engagement begins.

$10,400 – $17,333 per month
This is a calculated monthly equivalent based on 40 hours/week and approximately 52 weeks per year. It is not a fixed monthly salary; actual compensation is based on the applicable hourly rate and hours worked.

Why Join Mercor?
This role gives experienced accounting and audit professionals the opportunity to apply their professional judgment directly to frontier AI development.
Rather than performing routine accounting work, you will help determine how AI models should reason about real accounting and audit problems. Your work will include reviewing model outputs, identifying incorrect accounting treatments, writing reference solutions, designing benchmark tasks and turning senior-level accounting judgment into clear evaluation standards that AI researchers can use.
The position is especially relevant for professionals who want to combine deep accounting/audit expertise with AI evaluation and model development while working directly alongside an AI research team.
Important Location Note
This is not a remote role. The Mercor listing specifically states that the position is hybrid in the Bay Area, California, with on-site work required multiple days each week. Candidates not currently based in the Bay Area must be willing to relocate at their own cost.
