About the Role

This accounting position supports month-end close, monitors General Ledger entries, determines reclassifications, explains variances, and analyzes accounts to help protect against year-end audit exposure. The role acts as an accounting business partner on moderately complex issues and develops improved accounting procedures and policies while performing statistical and financial analysis. Confidential handling of financial data is required as you work with internal and external sources.

What You'll Do

  • Participate in the month-end closing process and monitor GL entries for appropriate allocation, reclassifications, variances, and account analysis.
  • Develop and recommend new procedures, processes and policies for the accounting operations of the assigned function.
  • Serve as accounting business partner on moderately complex issues; research and reconcile selected accounts and cost variances.
  • Prepare month-end journal entries, reconciliations, budgets, forms, reports, and schedules; communicate issues to field partners, corporate support staff, and management.
  • Analyze data and perform both statistical and financial analyses; think and act independently when judgment is required.
  • Protect Petco’s accounting data and maintain confidentiality; rotate through various functional areas of Accounting (General, Inventory, Accounts Payable, etc.) and provide coverage as needed.
  • Seek process improvements, drive efficiency and profitability, and participate in special projects as assigned.
  • Perform additional duties across AP/AR functions as described (AP: high-level reconciliations, APDR, journal entries, vendor setup changes, SOX controls; AR: reconciliations and MRC).

What We're Looking For

  • Experience with month-end close and general ledger analysis; ability to explain variances and ensure accurate financial reporting.
  • Strong analytical skills to research root causes, reconcile accounts, and resolve discrepancies.
  • Effective written and verbal communication with field partners, corporate support staff, and management.
  • Ability to work independently, handle ambiguity, and manage multiple tasks.
  • Flexibility to rotate through accounting functions (General, Inventory, Accounts Payable, etc.).
  • Understanding of internal controls and SOX-related requirements; commitment to protecting confidential information.
