Job title: Academic Advisor
About the Role Serve as the primary academic advising resource within the unit, coordinating advising activities, training staff, and supporting student success across the university. The position includes advising, data collection for assessment, policy interpretation, and collaboration with colleges and divisions, with a College Specific focus on STEM programs.
What You'll Do
- Train and mentor new advisors, support staff, interns, graduate assistants, and student employees; supervise student staff and coordinate schedules.
- Coordinate advisement, recruitment, career services, and retention activities; assess, report, and make recommendations regarding advisement and recruitment functions and activities.
- Verify and sign off on completion of degree requirements; prepare various academic advising reports; develop and coordinate advising training for departments, faculty, and/or advisors.
- Develop student support programs and workshops; serve as the unit’s resource person; coordinate graduation activities and audits.
- Understand policy nuances and interpretations; recommend policy creation or interpretation; establish courses of action; coordinate advisor meetings and report operational status.
- Develop and revise informational materials and curriculum guides; review applications for restricted majors; assist in data collection and assessment.
- Advise current and prospective students on placement interpretation, academic goal setting, academic planning, program requirements, scheduling and registration; resolve degree progress issues.
- Interpret university policies; maintain FERPA compliance; maintain student files and records; collaborate across units; attend trainings; participate in professional development; serve on committees.
- Assist in graduation audits; provide STEM-focused advising as described in College Specific Responsibilities.
- College Specific Responsibilities: Provide comprehensive STEM advising; work with STEM chairs and program coordinators on curricular changes; address senior sheets and exit interviews; refer students to Careers/Internships; promote STEM College and participate in outreach.
- Other Functions: Train new hires; perform other duties as assigned.
What We're Looking For
- A bachelor’s degree (minimum qualification).
- Knowledge of university policies and procedures; office practices; department/division policies; and FERPA; ability to interpret policies.
- Strong communication, data management, reporting, and documentation skills; ability to train others; effective collaboration.
- Proficiency with office equipment, typing, data entry, computer operation, and software applications.
- Ability to troubleshoot problems, gather data, analyze facts, and work independently or in a team.
- Commitment to maintaining student records and providing access to services while following regulations.
Nice to Have
- Experience with STEM advising and STEM program activities; familiarity with graduation audits; working with department chairs and program coordinators.
- Experience collaborating across units and representing advising in committees.
