Principal Product Manager

Microsoft
United States

About this role

A Principal Product Manager at Microsoft in the United States uses AI and a deep understanding of customers and market signals to anticipate unmet or unknown needs and identify opportunities for enhancements, development, and new products or services across multiple feature areas and across divisional boundaries. The role combines quantitative and qualitative analysis of usage, telemetry, customer feedback, listening systems, market and industry trends, and security and ethical considerations. It involves engaging directly with customers through one-on-one visits and interviews as well as broader engagements (e.g., social media, events) to solicit feedback and understand experiences with Microsoft products and services. The role acts as a subject-matter expert in market and user research, including competitive analyses and examination of market and industry trends and requirements or regulations, and shares insights with senior internal and external stakeholders to ensure cross-team alignment. It leads partnerships and contract negotiations, assesses acquisition targets to enhance offerings, and collaborates across teams to create products that are easy to adopt and deliver a positive customer experience.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate and build experience across multiple feature areas (product, service) across divisional boundaries. Lead problem definition and incubate solutions for a team or organization.

  • Understand the broader Microsoft ecosystem and identify how to leverage capabilities across products.

  • Coach and mentor internal teams to develop problem statements, form hypotheses for new feature areas, and identify dependencies across feature areas to address highly complex customer needs and market opportunities.

  • Use AI for trend analysis and sentiment evaluation to generate hypotheses, understand problems, and predict customer preferences. Lead experiments and A/B tests to improve model performance and inform feature development.

  • Establish clear patterns of root problems and their relation to previous trends across customers, determine impacted customers or sectors, foresee future opportunities, and use research evidence to influence feature prioritization.

  • Ensure product-market fit and alignment between customers, market, internal stakeholders, senior leadership, and Microsoft goals and strategy.

  • Collaborate with Software Engineering, Hardware Engineering, Product Marketing, Design, Security Subject Matter Experts, and others to ensure customer and security requirements are met.

  • Validate market size, explore new opportunities to determine the most valuable products or features, and work with other teams (e.g., Finance) to build the Long Range Plan (LRP).

  • Define and optimize AI-driven solution options across multiple feature areas, integrating insights into refinement and experimentation processes.

  • Partner with senior colleagues on refinement sessions to translate hypothesis results into solutions aligned with Objectives and Key Results (OKRs) and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).

  • Resolve alignment issues, contribute to portfolio-level solutions, and drive cross-functional clarity with senior leadership.

  • Translate complex AI concepts into business value and engage executives and customers to build consensus for AI-first product strategies. Influence and drive engagement with cross-functional partnerships and external partners to gather input and support for product vision and roadmap.

  • Provide thought leadership and rally the team around a common vision, leveraging AI-driven workflows to secure buy-in from senior leadership for product strategy across organizational boundaries.

  • Balance listening and information sharing to achieve alignment and advocate for priorities and resources needed to deliver outcomes for multiple feature areas across divisional boundaries.

  • Identify long-term AI-informed investment opportunities, evaluate tradeoffs, and prioritize investments in coordination with cross-organizational partners. Guide prioritization of features or experiences in the roadmap to meet success criteria and OKRs.

  • Own or partner in driving significant business impact, simulate and track performance metrics (OKRs, KPIs such as engagement, usage, acquisition, retention, NPS, revenue, profitability, and feature-level outcomes), and ensure clarity on fundamentals (quality, privacy, security, compliance, accessibility, COGS) across divisional boundaries.

  • Set and define success metrics for AI-related features and products, work with internal partner teams to identify data needs and ensure telemetry is developed and collected responsibly and compliantly; explain outcomes and drive decision-making.

  • Deeply understand the COGS and KPIs across feature areas to improve profitability and perform advanced insights analyses as needed.

  • Go To Market

  • Collaborate with Product Marketing, Business Planning, and Engineering to identify product release criteria, including security requirements such as Security Development Lifecycle (SDL) compliance, as well as customer acquisition, usage, retention, and monetization strategies.

  • Scale Product Marketing by developing marketing and rollout plans and content (e.g., product overviews, blogs, landing pages) for individual features or smaller products that contribute to a broader product solution area.

  • Create and drive strategy for moving multiple feature areas from private preview to public preview and general availability, and coordinate customer support plans (FAQs, scripts), change management, and communications.

  • Evangelize supported feature areas, including AI-driven solutions, with internal and external stakeholders, partners, analysts, and customers through presentations, blogs, social media, and other forums. Present at Executive Briefing Centers (EBCs) and industry events, partnering with Product Marketing to educate on the product and leverage AI to develop content.

  • Product/Service Definition

  • Translate complex AI concepts into business value and engage with executives and customers to build consensus and support for AI-first product strategies.

  • Drive cross-functional partnerships, engage external partners and early adopting customers, and gather input to shape vision, strategy, and roadmap for multiple feature areas across boundaries.

  • Provide thought leadership and address questions from group managers and other leaders, rallying the team around a shared vision and leveraging AI-driven workflows to secure buy-in for product strategy across organizational boundaries.

  • Advocate for priorities and resources needed to deliver outcomes, collaborate with others to align around shared priorities, and balance listening with information sharing.

  • Identify AI-informed, long-term investment opportunities, evaluate tradeoffs, and prioritize investments in consultation with cross-organizational partners for multiple feature areas. Guide the choice of which features or experiences to prioritize in the roadmap to achieve success criteria.

  • Own or co-own the delivery of significant business impact, define and track success metrics (OKRs, KPIs) and ensure data availability and telemetry to inform decisions. Work with internal teams to secure necessary data, justify outcomes, and drive decision making, with attention to quality, privacy, security, compliance, accessibility, and cost considerations.

  • Develop a deep understanding of the overall ecosystem and how to leverage capabilities across Microsoft products to meet customer and market needs.
