- Actively engage and establish a non-judgmental, respectful relationship with individuals in crisis.
- Use open-ended questions to define problems and obtain a clear picture of the situation.
- Use closed-ended questions to assess safety, including suicide risk prompts.
- Assess life-threatening situations, evaluate safety and acuity, and determine medically necessary services.
- Mobilize community resources and plan immediate risk reduction.
